Introduction

Welcome to How the Internet Stays Safe — Course 1 of the IndusForward Skills Series.

Every day you use the internet. You log into your bank and transfer money to a friend. You send an email that arrives on the other side of the world in seconds. You check your SBI balance and the bank sends you private information across a public network. How does any of this happen safely? That is what this course is about.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for students who have just completed the five classroom sessions of Course 1. It is your after-class reading — something to go back to when you want to review a concept, look up a term, or refresh your memory before Course 2.

You do not need a computer science degree to read this. If you can use a smartphone, you have everything you need.

Meet the Characters

You will meet the same people throughout this book that you met in class.

Deepa is a student like you. She asks the questions most people are afraid to ask — “Wait, but what does that actually mean?” When Deepa is confused, she says so. That is a strength, not a weakness.

Rohan is Deepa’s classmate. He likes to go deeper. When the class moves on, Rohan is still thinking about the last question. Look for Rohan Goes Deeper boxes if you want the optional extra detail.

Rajan bhaiya runs a cyber cafe near the college. He is the cautionary tale. One wrong click cost him ₹50,000 and every file on his computer. His story is why this course exists.

Sunita didi works in customer support at a bank. She uses everything in this course every single day on the job. She is the career destination — achievable, real, and well-paying.

How to Use This Book

Each session has three pages:

  • Overview — the big idea and what to expect
  • Concepts — the full explanation with analogies and examples
  • Hands-On — step-by-step exercises you can do on your smartphone right now

Read the Overview first. Then work through Concepts at your own pace. Then do the Hands-On exercises — don’t skip them. The tools are the part that makes everything stick.

At the back, you will find a Glossary (every technical term explained in plain English) and a Further Reading list (where to go next).

What You Will Be Able to Do After This Course

By the time you finish all five sessions, you will be able to:

  • Explain how data travels from your phone to a server and back
  • Tell the difference between HTTP and HTTPS and why it matters
  • Read a digital certificate and understand what it is telling you
  • Recognise a phishing attempt and explain why it is dangerous
  • Describe how online banking keeps your money safe
  • Use tools like SSL Labs, VirusTotal, and ICANN WHOIS like a professional
  • Have a real conversation about a career in network security

Let’s begin.
